What is the IELTS test?

The IELTS test, which comes from the abbreviation “International English Language Testing System“, verifies and attests the level of English knowledge through four samples: spoken, read, written and listened. It is the most renowned English language certification exam in the world. It is also a test that can offer you many opportunities especially in countries where the official language is English.

IELTS is the only exam accepted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of the United Kingdom (NMC) to prove that a general nurse with completed studies within the European Union has an adequate level of English to be able to practice medicine in full safety.

Currently, there are two test options of the IELTS exam: Academic and General Training.
Academic version is the one chosen by the NMC for general nurses wishing to practice in the UK.

IELTS has four samples – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Examiners must complete all four samples to receive the IELTS test result. The total time spent on this test is two hours and 45 minutes.

The listening and speaking parties are the same for both the General and Academic versions, but the reading and writing versions for the Academic version are specific.

The Listening module is also the first in this test and consists of four sections with 40 tasks to be completed within 30 minutes. For this part of the test, those examined must pay close attention to the recorded conversation that is played at the beginning of the test. This recording does not play for the second time, so the information should be retained as best as possible in the first attempt.

The Module of Academic Writing Module or the third test of the IELTS test has two tasks to be completed within 60 minutes. There will be two questions.

For the first you have to write at least 150 words and for the second you have to express your thoughts in at least 250 words.

At the final note, the second question is dotted with more than the first question.

The Academic Reading module is the second part of the exam and consists of three sections with a total of 40 tasks to be completed in 60 minutes.

This part checks the examined people how well they can understand a read text. You can go through all the questions if you think you can start answering them, unless the test is a little strange to you.

The final test of the exam is Speaking, you will have a kind of native-speaker English speaking interview. This one-on-one discussion will take about 15 minutes.

This module is organized in such a way that it does not allow the examiners to practice the answers to the questions asked. It is very important to relax, make yourself comfortable to answer your questions as much as possible.

Frequent questions

What kind of IELTS test I have to give?

General nurses must obtain an IELTS Academic Certificate. General Training IELTS is NOT accepted by NMC.

What note to IELTS Academic do I need to register with NMC?

EU general nurses need at least 7.0 out of 9.0 in all four test samples.

Why do i need so high note at IELTS Academic?

Following the consultations started in 2003, it was decided that 7.0 is the minimum mark that verifies an acceptable language level to pursue as a registered general nurse.

I obtained 6.5 in one of the IELTS samples. Can I still apply?

No. Each score must be at least 7.0, obviously average. The only possible way is if you have given the test 2 times within a maximum of 6 months and you have one of the two minimum grades 7.0 for each of the samples, even if you have taken the other 6.5.

However, if one of these certificates has one of the lower marks of 6.5 (eg 6.0), this certificate will not be considered, regardless of the grades obtained in the other evidence.

I passed the IELTS Academic test 3 years ago and I have the note required by the NMC. Will my registration certificate be accepted?

IELTS notes are only valid for 2 years, so you’ll need to resume your examination.

The payment for this exam varies from one country to another. Worldwide, this test has over 1,000 testing centers in over 140 countries. Below you find the registration fee for some of the EU member states:
